Two-time defending MWHL Cup Champion NorCal Ice Raiders had to put their dream of a third championship on hold due to the Covid-19 pandemic. The area around their home arena, as well as that of rival Santa Rosa Growlers, was one of the nation’s first hot spots for the virus.
With their home at Vacaville Ice Sports temporarily closed, the Ice Raiders have had time to reflect on their accomplishments. Over the past two seasons, the Ice Raiders ran up impressive regular season records and defeated Rocky Division foes Vail and Breckenridge in the MWHL Cup Finals.
The Ice Raiders have also had a chance to devise ways to retain their title. The task won’t be easy. With the arrival of the Growlers, a team that includes several former Ice Raiders, the men in black face a tough path to the finals. General Manager Simon LeBleu will take advantage of the extended time off to get injured players back and recruit a few more key pieces to give the Ice Raiders their best chance.
The Ice Raiders will return to action, hopefully in the Fall of 2020, as soon as the MWHL determines it is safe to do so and a health policy is put in place to protect players, coaches, referees, and fans.
