“The Mountain West Hockey League (MWHL) has announced plans to restart play for the 2021-2022 season,” according to Commissioner Thomas Brown. “The league will work with its clubs and their arenas to safely bring together players, coaches, officials, and fans for MWHL hockey.”
After more than a year of dormancy forced by the Covid-19 pandemic, the MWHL will look a little different when it returns to play with fewer teams on the initial card. “The front offices of several clubs such as the Reno Ice Raiders remained active during the shutdown and those teams are already sorting their rosters and planning exhibition games,” said Brown. “However, other clubs have opted to remain on hiatus due to local health restrictions, arena closures, or other circumstances.” Clubs that opt out this season can retain their franchise rights provided they return by the 2022-2023 season.
The MWHL debuted in 2012 with four clubs, expanded the following season to six clubs, and featured as many as ten clubs in the years since. “Like many businesses emerging from the pandemic, the MWHL will face challenges this year, but we have a lot of confidence in our clubs, players, sponsors, and especially our fans as we look to a brighter future,” said Brown.
The MWHL is a Senior A minor hockey league with clubs spanning the western United States. The league was founded in 2012. The MWHL and its media division, MWHL Network, are operated by WebFactorE LLC.
